Chalcis (Χαλκίδα) is an ancient Greek city, which today is the center of Dem Chalcis, Nom Euboea, the capital of the island of Euboea. The population of Chalkida is about 54,000. The name of the city comes from the Greek word "χαλκός" or bronze, as there are bronze deposits in the region.
