Cape Horn is the southernmost point of South America and is part of the Chilean Hermit Islands of Tierra del Fuego. It was carried inland into the Drake Passage, marking the dividing line between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

This route is one of the most dangerous to sail in the world. Whirling winds combined with strong sea currents cause huge, sometimes 20-meter waves. Icebergs are also found in the area. This waterway was used until 1914 when the Panama Canal was dug.

Sailors who succeeded in passing Cape Horn in a westerly direction had the right to wear a gold ring on their left ear as a mark of respect.

The archipelago, together with Cape Horn, is one of the most intact island systems in the world and has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
