Kitebey Fortress, Egypt

Kitebey Fortress - Memeluk Sultan Kitebey Fort, so narrow as if built for toy soldiers, is a landmark in Alexandria. 
It was built on the original site of Pharos, the ancient lighthouse of Alexandria. Although Pharos was restored at various times, it finally collapsed and the original Fort was built in its place in 1480. 
It is even believed that some of the stones with which the fort was built previously belonged to the legendary lighthouse, especially several huge columns of red granite in the northeast. The site of Kitebey Fortress is very well chosen - it is perched at the end of a very long pier.
There is a lot to be said about the Kitebey Fortress. The Alexandria lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the world, stoically lasted 1600 years before turning into rubble. 
In 1480, the Mamluk Sultan Kitebey used for his fortress the still holding and solid foundations of Farah. Having erected many monuments and architectural landmarks throughout Cairo, today Kitebey Fortress is the only memory left of it.
Even if a person is not hungry for history, Kitebey Fortress is worth a visit for other reasons. The wonderful view of the whole of Alexandria, the Museum of Marine Flora and Fauna, the Sea Aquarium, as well as the mosque.
